What is Beef Tallow and Why Is It Used in Skincream
Beef tallow is a traditional, nutrient-rich fat rendered from beef suet. When purified properly, it becomes smooth, stable, and highly compatible with human skin because its fatty acid profile closely resembles our natural oils.
It’s used in skin creams because it deeply moisturizes, supports the skin barrier, and is rich in fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K — making it especially effective for dry, cracked, or weather-exposed skin.
Does it smell like beef?
No — properly rendered tallow should not smell like beef. When it’s carefully purified, it has a very mild, natural scent.
Our balm has a light, clean aroma from its natural ingredients, and once applied, the scent fades quickly without lingering. We also add a touch of essential oils to help your skin smell refreshed.
Where do you source your tallow from?
We source our beef tallow from Alberta-raised cattle, partnering with trusted local suppliers who prioritize quality and responsible farming practices.
The suet is gently rendered in small batches to create a clean, smooth, and stable balm — keeping Northern Hide proudly rooted in Alberta craftsmanship. Our product is made in Whitecourt, Alberta.
Where are your products manufactured?
Our products are handcrafted in Whitecourt, Alberta by Grandma Gail herself. Every batch is carefully tested for consistency, quality, scent, and texture to ensure you receive a rich, smooth tallow balm made with care — and delivered fresh, right on time.

- Deep Hydration
- Non-toxic all natural ingredients
- Made in Whitecourt, Alberta
Tallow balm is a rich, deeply nourishing moisturizer made from rendered beef fat, traditionally used to support healthy, resilient skin. Because its fatty acid profile is similar to our own skin’s natural oils, it absorbs beautifully and helps restore the skin barrier without synthetic fillers or fragrances.
Use it as a daily face or body moisturizer, a soothing balm for dry hands and cracked heels, an after-shave treatment, or to calm irritated skin after sun or wind exposure. A little goes a long way — warm a small amount between your fingers and massage into clean, slightly damp skin for best results.
